“Kaisha no Shikumi: Order Backlog and the Cost of Completion”, Chapter 3: Nippon Sharyo: When a Redesign Reaches Costs and Cash Flow

Book’s reference date 2026-09-12 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeAn order backlog represents expected future revenue, not guaranteed profit. The profit from each order depends on the contract price and the total cost of completing the work, often over several years.

Sales in the year ended March 2026 were ¥99.97 billion and operating profit ¥11.62 billion, with an order backlog of ¥199.39 billion at the end of the year. Advances received from customers stood at ¥5.15 billion.

The company discloses when the backlog is expected to become sales, segment by segment: rolling stock within four years, with about 40% of it within one year.

The move that changed Nippon Sharyo

In November 2017 it ended the contract for bi-level passenger cars for the United States and decided to pay a settlement of $328,942,000.

In November 2012, Nippon Sharyo and Sumitomo Corporation jointly took an order for 130 bi-level passenger cars, 42 for California and 88 for the Midwest. The contract was worth $352 million, about ¥28.0 billion at the exchange rate of the time. It had to meet the Buy America provisions, under which materials and parts made in the United States are used in principle. The main causes the company gave in later years were car body strength requirements of a kind it had not handled before, the use of American materials and parts, and the large-scale redesign that followed the sudden failure of the bogie maker. In November 2017 it ended the original contract and switched to 137 single-level passenger cars built by an alternative maker. The settlement payment came to about ¥37.2 billion at ¥113 to the dollar, and in the same month the company borrowed ¥35.0 billion from JR Central. Listed securities, the head office, and the land and buildings of the Toyokawa works were among the assets pledged as collateral for that loan.
