“Kaisha no Shikumi: Earning Beyond the Till”, Chapter 1: AEON and Seven Bank: One Kept Its Finance Arm and Its Malls, the Other Took Its Bank Off the Books

Book’s reference date 2026-08-24 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeA company's profits depend not just on what it sells, but on who pays, and what they pay for.

The ATMs stand in convenience stores, but the machines belong to this company. When a user withdraws cash with another bank's card, the partner financial institution pays a per-transaction price set by contract.

For the year ended March 2026 on a parent-only basis, ATM-related fee income was ¥116.0 billion of ¥143.0 billion in ordinary income, or 81.1%. Interest on loans was ¥10.5 billion. The ¥18.1 billion of ATM placement fees, which is the rent for the space, is paid by this company (ratios calculated).

Figures from the book

How money moves at Seven Bank: when a user withdraws from another bank's account, partner institutions pay unit price times transactions, and the company pays a placement fee to the convenience store
How money moves at Seven Bank (figure from Chapter 1 of “Kaisha no Shikumi: Earning Beyond the Till”, year ended March 2026, in Japanese)

The move that changed Seven Bank

Make the fee on withdrawals from accounts at other financial institutions the centre of revenue.

Seven Bank opened in 2001. Of its non-consolidated ordinary revenue of ¥143 billion ($894 million) in the year ended March 2026, ATM fee income received from other financial institutions was ¥116 billion, or 81.1%, and interest on loans was ¥10.5 billion. The ¥18.1 billion of ATM placement fees is a cost this company pays to the sites where its machines stand. On March 6, 2025, Seven & i Holdings set out its intention to bring its voting rights below 40%, and after the acquisition of 194 million treasury shares for ¥50.8 billion on June 24, 2025, Seven Bank left Seven & i's consolidated group.

Coverage in the book

  • A 0.58% Margin at the General Merchandise Stores, and ATM Fees at 81.1%
  • What Does Seven Bank Earn From?
  • 28,536 ATMs, and 1.12 Billion Uses a Year
  • The ¥18.1 Billion of Placement Fees Is a Cost the Bank Pays
  • Ordinary Revenue Has Grown, Ordinary Profit Has Not
