SUMCO CORPORATION

Company highlights

Semiconductors are made by separate companies or divisions that divide design, manufacturing, and testing among them, and the prices and supply volumes of equipment and materials are set by product specifications, contract terms, factory production capacity, and inventory levels. The time between receiving an order and shipment, customer acceptance, revenue recognition, and receipt of payment depends on the contract, and investment in factories and equipment also becomes an expense through depreciation, spread over several years after the assets start operating.

“How Prices and Supply Work in Japan's Semiconductor Industry”, Chapter 4: What Determines Material Prices and Shipment Volumes

Book’s reference date 2026-09-20 / data last checked 2026-10-20

The move that changed SUMCO

With no room left to raise output in the existing buildings, it decided to invest a total of ¥228.7 billion (about $1.43 billion) in an expansion that starts with new buildings, and to give priority in supply to customers who accept longer contract terms.

On September 30, 2021, SUMCO and SUMCO TECHXIV CORPORATION announced that they had decided on a production capacity expansion totaling ¥228.7 billion (about $1.43 billion) for leading-edge 300 mm silicon wafers. The disclosure on the issue of new shares gives as background that room to raise output within the existing buildings had run out, and describes an expansion that starts with new buildings. On contract terms, the wording is "economically rational prices" and "contracts for longer terms," and it records that the existing long-term sales agreements run around two to three years and that priority in supply will go to customers who accept longer contracts. The document announcing the expansion sets out a supply policy on price and contract term alongside it. Whether the price and term of individual contracts were settled at that point cannot be determined from the documents consulted.
