“Kaisha no Shikumi: Order Backlog and the Cost of Completion”, Chapter 6: Toyo Engineering: A Backlog on the Books, and an Operating Loss

Book’s reference date 2026-09-12 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeAn order backlog represents expected future revenue, not guaranteed profit. The profit from each order depends on the contract price and the total cost of completing the work, often over several years.

Sales in the year ended March 2026 were ¥182.9 billion and the operating loss ¥19.0 billion, for an operating margin of minus 10.4%. The consolidated order backlog of ¥269.4 billion at the year-end is 1.47 times annual sales.

On a gas-fired power project in Brazil, talks with the customer on revising the price and the schedule did not reach agreement, and the company filed for arbitration in July 2025. Provisions for loss on construction contracts rose from ¥100 million in the year ended March 2022 to ¥3.3 billion in the year ended March 2026.

The move that changed Toyo Engineering

With the discussions on additional consideration and the schedule still unresolved, it filed for arbitration in July 2025.

On work taken on for a fixed amount, the contract amount does not change of itself when the schedule slips or the costs rise. Getting the customer to take on the increase means agreeing a revision of the contract, or, where no agreement is reached, settling the matter through arbitration or litigation. Toyo Engineering carried the discussions on and then filed for arbitration in July 2025. In the same year it took both the additional costs from the delay and the possibility that receivables cannot be collected into its accounts. The result of the arbitration will come later, and its amount is not in the accounts for this year.

Coverage in the book
