“Kaisha no Shikumi: Order Backlog and the Cost of Completion”, Chapter 1: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and IHI: A ¥13 Trillion Backlog and a Company That Runs on Mass-Produced Parts

Book’s reference date 2026-09-12 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeAn order backlog represents expected future revenue, not guaranteed profit. The profit from each order depends on the contract price and the total cost of completing the work, often over several years.

Revenue for the year ended March 2026 was ¥4,974.2 billion and business profit ¥432.2 billion. The order backlog at the end of the year was ¥13,237.7 billion, and contract liabilities, the part of the consideration already received from customers that has not yet become sales, stood at ¥2,161.9 billion.

The company expects to satisfy the remaining performance obligations of its Energy Systems business within seven years, and those of Logistics, Thermal and Drive Systems within one year.

The move that changed Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

It showed in its own figures, through large cruise ships, that a backlog can still produce losses.

In November 2011, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries took an order from AIDA Cruises for two large cruise ships of 125,000 gross tons with capacity for 3,250 passengers. They were originally to be delivered in 2015 and 2016. According to the report of the company's Large Cruise Ship Business Evaluation Committee, the cruise ship business had an operating loss of ¥9.3 billion ($58.1 million) in the year ended March 2012 (fiscal 2011), an operating profit of ¥6.0 billion in the year ended March 2013, an extraordinary loss of ¥64.1 billion in the second half of the year ended March 2014, an extraordinary loss of ¥69.5 billion in the year ended March 2015 and an extraordinary loss of ¥103.9 billion in the year ended March 2016, for a cumulative loss of ¥240.8 billion through the year ended March 2016. In the year ended March 2017 it recorded a further ¥34.3 billion of extraordinary losses and ¥7.8 billion of non-operating expenses on the cruise ships. The main causes the company gave were an inadequate assessment of what completing the basic design would take, the volume of design work for the hotel and cabin areas, changes in the customer's requirements, rework caused by design changes, and disruption of the construction process.
