“Kaisha no Shikumi: Selling the Same Hit Again and Again”, Chapter 5: Toho: Selling Films on Top of Cinemas and Real Estate

Book’s reference date 2026-09-11 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeThe long-term profits from a hit depend not just on its initial success, but on how long it keeps earning, how many forms it takes, and how many markets it reaches.

Of operating revenue of ¥360.7 billion in the year ended February 2026, Motion Pictures accounted for ¥182.6 billion and Real Estate for ¥79.2 billion. Real Estate's operating profit stayed between ¥16.7 billion and ¥19.0 billion in each of the last five fiscal years.

From the year ended February 2025, the company discloses IP and Animation, previously included in Motion Pictures, as a separate category.

The move that changed Toho

It joined up, inside the group, everything from acquiring anime rights through investment, production, distribution, exhibition and merchandising, and began disclosing that business separately from Motion Pictures.

From the year ended February 2025 the company has disclosed the IP and Animation activities that had been inside Motion Pictures as a separate category, and in that same year it acquired GKIDS of the United States and recorded ¥12.8 billion ($80.0 million) of goodwill. Operating revenue in the IP and Animation business in the year ended February 2026 was ¥75.3 billion and segment profit ¥17.3 billion, an operating margin of 23.0%. In the company's account, this business handles the use and licensing of video, the licensing of merchandising rights and the sale of merchandise, and overseas sales are handled by TOHO Global.

Coverage in the book

  • Of ¥360.7 Billion in Operating Revenue, Motion Pictures Accounts for 50.6%
