“Kaisha no Shikumi: Order Backlog and the Cost of Completion”, Chapter 1: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and IHI: A ¥13 Trillion Backlog and a Company That Runs on Mass-Produced Parts

Book’s reference date 2026-09-12 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeAn order backlog represents expected future revenue, not guaranteed profit. The profit from each order depends on the contract price and the total cost of completing the work, often over several years.

Revenue for the year ended March 2026 was ¥1,643.4 billion, operating profit ¥165.5 billion and the order backlog at the end of the year ¥1,768.3 billion. The company calls vehicular turbochargers, rotating machinery and commercial aero engines its mass-produced businesses, and says their remaining performance obligations are generally satisfied within one year.

In commercial aero engines, spare parts accounted for 60% of sales in the year ended March 2026, new engines 33% and MRO 7%. Deliveries of new engines rose from 789 in the year ended March 2022 to 1,078 in the year ended March 2026.

The move that changed IHI

It estimated the burden of additional inspections on engines already in service in a single step, as a reduction of revenue rather than as a provision.

IHI takes part in the PW1100G-JM engine program at about 15%. A quality problem was found in the manufacturing process for powder metallurgy parts that the maker, P&W, had produced in the past, and in September 2023 it was decided to inspect the parts concerned repeatedly and to shorten their service life. About 3,000 engines are affected, removal to reinstallation is expected to take 250 to 300 days, and an average of 350 aircraft are assumed to be on the ground in the years from 2024 to 2026. In the year ended March 2024, IHI estimated the additional maintenance costs and the compensation for aircraft on the ground at its participation share, and reduced revenue by ¥156.0 billion ($975 million) as consideration payable to a customer. Rather than record a cost as a provision, it reduced revenue and recognized a refund liability. Refund liabilities were ¥153.3 billion at the end of the year ended March 2024, and the balance identified as PW-related at the end of the year ended March 2026 was ¥53.5 billion. The actual payments were ¥39.3 billion in the year ended March 2025 and ¥48.8 billion in the year ended March 2026, so after the loss had been estimated in a single step, cash went on flowing out for years.

Coverage in the book

  • IHI's Order Backlog Is the Same Size as a Year of Revenue
  • Spare Parts Are 60% of Commercial Aircraft Engine Sales
  • IHI's Ten Fiscal Years, and Its Dividend Policy
  • In September 2023, an Additional Inspection Program Was Decided
