Chubu Electric Power

Chubu Electric Power Company,Incorporated

Company highlights

Plant and fuel costs, together with how much electricity is actually generated, set the cost of each kilowatt-hour, and supply, demand, and contract terms set the wholesale price. Rules and contracts for transmission, distribution, and retail set the rates charged, and decide from whom, when, and how far costs can be recovered.

“How Japan's Electricity Industry Moves Money and Sets Prices”, Chapter 2: What Sets the Price of the Electricity a Retailer Buys

Book’s reference date 2026-09-14 / data last checked 2026-10-20

The move that changed Chubu Electric Power

It transferred its existing thermal generation and the receiving, storage, and send-out of fuel to JERA, stopped carrying the cost of thermal generation itself, and chose to bear it as the cost of buying electricity.

On May 9, 2018, Chubu Electric Power announced that it had "today signed an absorption-type demerger agreement with JERA." The agreement appears on pages 29 and 30 of the convocation notice for the 94th ordinary general meeting of shareholders, and Article 1 reads, in the original, "shall cause the rights and obligations to be succeeded to by Party B, and Party B shall succeed to them." Party A is Chubu Electric Power and Party B is JERA, and the scope covers the sale of gas and LNG, the receiving, storage, and send-out of LNG, the thermal business of designated power plants, and the related management functions, while the dedicated biomass generation business is excluded. The effective date under the agreement is April 1, 2019. As a result, the revenue and fuel costs of the thermal business transferred to JERA are no longer consolidated in full in Chubu Electric Power's income statement, and cost of power purchased from other suppliers came to stand in Miraiz's books. The fuel cost of the dedicated biomass generation left out of the transfer remains as a component of the parent company's expenses of new energy and similar generation. How much this move changed Chubu Electric Power's consolidated profit cannot be calculated from the disclosures.

Coverage in the book

  • The High-Voltage Contract Has an Adjustment Line Beyond the Fuel Cost Adjustment
  • Miraiz's Books List What It Receives Next to What It Pays
  • Thermal Profit Reaches the Accounts by Two Separate Routes
  • Five Things Move the Purchase Price, and No Common Formula Can Be Confirmed
  • The Ceiling for Regulated Rates Is ¥68,900 per Kiloliter, and High-Voltage Plans Adjust for the Market Price Too
