The Kansai Electric Power

The Kansai Electric Power Company, Incorporated

Company highlights

Plant and fuel costs, together with how much electricity is actually generated, set the cost of each kilowatt-hour, and supply, demand, and contract terms set the wholesale price. Rules and contracts for transmission, distribution, and retail set the rates charged, and decide from whom, when, and how far costs can be recovered.

“How Japan's Electricity Industry Moves Money and Sets Prices”, Chapter 1: Who Receives Your Electricity Payments

Book’s reference date 2026-09-14 / data last checked 2026-10-20

The move that changed Kansai Electric Power

It kept the structure of running its own nuclear plants in the parent company and combining them with retail and wholesale sales, and carried it through by returning to a seven-reactor fleet.

On September 14, 2023, Kansai Electric Power announced its plan to "start up the reactor on September 15, 2023" at Takahama Unit 2, and on October 16, 2023, it announced that the unit had "returned to full operation." The president's comment explained that the company had "achieved a seven-reactor fleet." On February 14, 2023, it had announced that it "will abolish the ceiling on the fuel cost adjustment" for some deregulated plans, changing its recovery terms as well. The form of running nuclear plants in the parent company shows in the nuclear capacity factor of 84.1% and the sending-end nuclear generation of 46.0 billion kWh for the year ended March 31, 2026. What the restarts have earned in cumulative profit, and how far the safety investment has been recovered, cannot be known from these announcements.

  • Share prices: not published (no data source allows redistribution). No share-price-based indicators (such as the price earnings ratio) and no extension of past growth into the future
  • Average age, average length of service and average annual salary: the reporting company alone (the parent). At a holding company, a small head-office staff. Payout ratio (basic facts): dividend per share ÷ consolidated earnings per share, calculated here (the payout ratio in the annual securities report is the reporting company’s figure, on a different basis). Representative and founding date: gBizINFO (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry), some companies only
  • “Retrieved disclosed figures”: every value readable as a number from the annual securities report. Company-wide values only (no segment or other breakdowns)
  • Segment table: machine transcription of the segment information in the annual securities report. Business names as labelled by the company in its XBRL. No table where segment sales differ from the disclosed total by more than 1%. Adjustments, corporate, eliminations and “other” left out of the table and the share denominator, as they are not businesses
  • Breakdowns of amounts, not diagrams of how the business works. Who pays whom, and for what, is not in the disclosed figures; no lines drawn from guesswork
  • No reproduction of the book’s content. Figures from the same filings; text written separately
