“Kaisha no Shikumi: Raising Prices”, Chapter 5: Seria: Still ¥110, with an Operating Margin That Fell from 10.6% to 6.8%

Book’s reference date 2026-08-18 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumePricing power comes from structure, not the product.

For the year ended March 2026, Seria had net sales of ¥255.7 billion and operating income of ¥21.0 billion. Operating income was 8.2% of net sales.

It builds the business on never moving from a single price of ¥100 before tax. What it can move is the specification, the quantity in the pack, the range, sourcing, stock turnover, and the efficiency of logistics and store operations. Same-store sales reached 105.5% of the previous year.

Figures from the book

How money moves at Seria: what is sold at ¥100 before tax becomes sales
How money moves at Seria (figure from Chapter 5 of “Kaisha no Shikumi: Raising Prices”, year ended March 2026, in Japanese)

The Move That Changed Seria

It left ¥100 before tax unchanged as the cost-of-sales ratio rose, changing sizes and quantities and dropping products instead.

In the year ended March 2021, Seria had an operating margin of 10.6% and a gross margin of 43.3%. From there, the weak yen and higher raw-material costs continued. The company stated that the cost-of-sales ratio rose 1.5 points in the year ended March 2023, from 56.6% to 58.1%, and it rose a further 0.6 points in the year ended March 2024. Even so, ¥100 before tax did not change. The operating margin for the year ended March 2024 was 6.8% and the gross margin 41.3%. Revised product specifications and higher existing-store sales then brought the operating margin to 8.2% in the year ended March 2026. It has not reached the 10.6% of the year ended March 2021.

Coverage in the book

  • A Company That Keeps a Single Price
  • What Does Seria Earn From?
  • What Is Growing Is the Customer Count, Not Spend per Customer
  • The Cost-of-Sales Ratio Rose to 58.7%, and the Selling Price Did Not Change
  • Even Among ¥100 Shops, the Pricing Is Designed Differently
