“Kaisha no Shikumi: Earning Beyond the Till”, Chapter 2: Marui: Retail and Fintech, with 80.8% of Profit from Fintech

Book’s reference date 2026-08-24 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeA company's profits depend not just on what it sells, but on who pays, and what they pay for.

For the year ended March 2026, revenue was ¥276.9 billion and operating income ¥50.2 billion. The fintech business accounts for 80.8% of the combined profit of the two businesses; retail is the rest (ratios calculated).

Even inside the ¥88.4 billion it calls retail sales, the largest piece is ¥41.9 billion of rent from fixed-term tenants, or 47.4%. Payment for goods bought and resold comes to ¥3.3 billion. The dividend has risen for 14 years running.

Figures from the book

How money moves at Marui: what the customer pays in the store goes to the tenant, and Marui receives rent from tenants and card fees
How money moves at Marui Group (figure from Chapter 2 of “Kaisha no Shikumi: Earning Beyond the Till”, year ended March 2026, in Japanese)

The move that changed Marui

Switch the contracts on the selling floors from department-store buying to fixed-term leases, and take a monthly rent from the tenants.

Marui Group began converting its stores to fixed-term leases as a five-year plan from the year ended March 2015. The target was 62,000 tsubo of floor space (the tsubo is the unit used for floor area in Japan). It kept changing tenants and switching contracts, and finished in March 2019. The company states that it reached 66,000 tsubo, 106% of the plan, and improved profit by ¥2.3 billion ($14.4 million). Over the same period it changed the name of the card business from payment to Fintech, a term that takes in asset building, insurance, and rent guarantees. Operating profit in the year ended March 2026 was ¥50.2 billion, and the dividend has risen for fourteen years running, ten of them to a record high.
