Company highlights

Semiconductors are made by separate companies or divisions that divide design, manufacturing, and testing among them, and the prices and supply volumes of equipment and materials are set by product specifications, contract terms, factory production capacity, and inventory levels. The time between receiving an order and shipment, customer acceptance, revenue recognition, and receipt of payment depends on the contract, and investment in factories and equipment also becomes an expense through depreciation, spread over several years after the assets start operating.

“How Prices and Supply Work in Japan's Semiconductor Industry”, Chapter 2: How Running Equipment Leads to Sales of Consumables

Book’s reference date 2026-09-20 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Investment under way

To keep supplying consumables, it decided to build a new precision processing tools plant at its Hiroshima Works and to move production there from existing plants and consolidate it.

On April 18, 2025, DISCO announced that it would build the Gohara Plant at its Hiroshima Works. The announcement states that the new plant will be "used for the production of precision processing tools" and that production capacity will be "relocated and consolidated" from existing plants. The purposes given are expansion of production capacity, improvement of production efficiency, and a response to the risk of storm surge at the Kure Plant. The construction cost of the first phase in the plan at the time of the announcement was ¥33.0 billion (about $206 million), construction was scheduled to start on February 1, 2026, and completion is scheduled for April 30, 2028. Even in a business that keeps selling consumables, the maker of the abrasive tools has to invest in plants and equipment.

Coverage in the book

  • The Abrasive Tools That Cut the Wafer Wear Down With Every Pass
  • The Transaction That Brings In Equipment and the One That Replenishes Abrasive Tools Happen Separately
  • Equipment Becomes Revenue at Customer Acceptance, Processing Tools at Delivery
  • Consumables Sales Move With the Years When Customer Utilization Rose and When It Fell
  • Disclosure of Orders Ended in 2022, and the Company Points to the Trend in Shipment Value
