“Kaisha no Shikumi: Order Backlog and the Cost of Completion”, Chapter 4: Kanadevia: Years of Construction, Then Decades of Operation

Book’s reference date 2026-09-12 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeAn order backlog represents expected future revenue, not guaranteed profit. The profit from each order depends on the contract price and the total cost of completing the work, often over several years.

Sales in the year ended March 2026 were ¥645.22 billion and operating profit ¥12.19 billion. The order backlog at the end of the year was ¥2,284.7 billion, which works out at 3.54 times sales when calculated from the disclosed figures.

The company discloses that 64% of the backlog is continuing business, such as operation and maintenance, and 36% is EPC. About 25% is expected to become sales within one year, about 27% in one to three years and about 48% four years out or later.

The move that changed Kanadevia

Kanadevia Inova bought the company that had been operating a plant its own group built, and completed the acquisition on March 13, 2026.

The Dublin plant was delivered by Kanadevia Inova, then named Hitachi Zosen Inova, as the main contractor for its design, construction and commissioning, and it began operating in 2017. What the company acquired is Encyclis Ireland Operations, which had carried out the operation and maintenance of the plant after it began running. In the announcement of the acquisition agreement in March 2025, the company said it would take over the operation and maintenance work for the remaining 38 years through to 2062. The plant generates electricity for about 115,000 households. The company calls a project developed as a single package, with long-term O&M following the EPC, a Recurrent Origination, and distinguishes it from one-off EPC work for third parties. For the year ending March 2029, Kanadevia Inova has set out a target it calls the 40/40/20 model: recurring business 40%, projects of that integrated kind 40%, and one-off EPC for third parties 20%. Goodwill stood at ¥1.08 billion ($6.75 million) at the end of the year ended March 2023, ¥4.26 billion at the end of the year ended March 2024, ¥14.06 billion at the end of the year ended March 2025 and ¥31.11 billion at the end of the year ended March 2026, and the company says it comes from acquisitions of O&M companies and similar deals.

Coverage in the book

  • When the Construction Ends, the Operating Contract Begins
  • 64% of the Backlog Is Operation and Maintenance after Construction
  • Construction Is Recognized as Sales by Progress, Operation over the Period of the Service
  • The Backlog for a Single Plant Holds Both Construction and Operation
