“Kaisha no Shikumi: Raising Prices”, Chapter 3: MUJI: Stumbled on a Price Increase, Then Rebuilt Its Prices

Book’s reference date 2026-08-18 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumePricing power comes from structure, not the product.

For the year ended August 2025, Ryohin Keikaku (Muji) had operating revenue of ¥784.6 billion and operating income of ¥73.8 billion. Operating income was 9.4% of operating revenue, and the gross margin was 51.36% (calculated from disclosed figures).

In April 2023, sales at existing stores and the online store in Japan fell to 85.8% of the same month a year earlier, and customer numbers to 81.7%. From there it separated what to raise from what to hold, put different products into the lowest price band, and rebuilt the structure of its prices.

Figures from the book

How money moves at Ryohin Keikaku: materials, planning, manufacturing and selling are all carried in house
How money moves at Muji (figure from Chapter 3 of “Kaisha no Shikumi: Raising Prices”, year ended August 2025, in Japanese)

The Move That Changed MUJI

It held the increase to about 20% of the spring-summer range and added more products at ¥500 or less.

In the year ended August 2023, Ryohin Keikaku's existing stores in Japan and its online store recorded sales of 96.5%, a customer count of 93.2%, and spend per customer of 103.6%. In April 2023, just after the increase, the customer count fell to 81.7%. The company confined the increase to about 20% of the spring-summer range and left about 80% unchanged, prepared different products for the cheapest price range, such as the ¥1,490 fitted sheet, and added about 90 everyday items at ¥500 or less. Alongside that, it replaced the apparel planning team and rebuilt how it ran its floors, its inventory, and its clearance markdowns. The 23 items including the retort curry it had raised from ¥350 to ¥390 in 2023 were lowered to ¥350 in March 2024. For the year ended August 2025, operating revenue was ¥784.6 billion ($4.90 billion) and operating profit ¥73.8 billion, up 31.5%, with an operating margin of 9.4%. The customer count at existing stores and the online store was above the year before in all 12 months.

Coverage in the book

  • It Did Not Put All of the Raised Prices Back
  • What Does Ryohin Keikaku Earn From?
  • Existing Stores Were Already Below the Year Before, Even Before the Increase
  • The Range Under ¥500 Began Before the Increase
  • It Also Changed How It Planned Products, Ran Its Floors, and Held Inventory
