“Kaisha no Shikumi: Selling the Same Hit Again and Again”, Chapter 4: Capcom: 83.7% of the Games It Sold Were Released in Earlier Years

Book’s reference date 2026-09-11 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeThe long-term profits from a hit depend not just on its initial success, but on how long it keeps earning, how many forms it takes, and how many markets it reaches.

Of the 59.07 million console game units sold in the year ended March 2026, 49.46 million, or 83.7%, were titles released in earlier fiscal years. The company calls them repeat titles.

In the year ended March 2020, when that share first passed 70%, sales fell from ¥100.0 billion to ¥81.6 billion, and operating profit rose from ¥18.1 billion to ¥22.8 billion.

The move that changed Capcom

It decided to make the sales of a single game the largest not in the year of release but over about five years.

In its integrated report the company sets out a pricing policy that makes units and profit the largest over about five years rather than in a single year. Right after release a game sells at $60 to $70, and the price comes down to about $10 and then $5 as its market value changes. In the year ended March 2020, when the repeat share passed 70% for the first time, sales fell from ¥100.0 billion ($625 million) to ¥81.6 billion and operating profit rose from ¥18.1 billion to ¥22.8 billion.
