“Kaisha no Shikumi: Buying to Resell or Brokering the Sale”, Chapter 5: Mercari: No Purchasing, and a Fee on Every Transaction

Book’s reference date 2026-09-10 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeIn the secondhand business, profits depend not just on selling prices, but on whether a company buys goods for resale or earns fees by connecting buyers and sellers.

Individuals list and individuals buy. Mercari does not purchase goods in its main business; when a sale is completed it receives 10% of the selling price from the seller. Its consolidated statement of financial position has no separate line for inventories.

In the year ended June 2026, domestic Marketplace GMV was ¥1.2856 trillion, with 24.19 million monthly users. Under the buyback request service launched in December 2024, Mercari itself becomes the contractual buyer in some cases. The U.S. business posted its first full-year profit in the year ended June 2025.

Figures from the book

The flow of a trade on Mercari in Japan: the seller sets the price, a buyer buys, and Mercari holds the money. When the trade is complete the company receives 10% of the selling price

The move that changed Mercari

It reviewed how the fees and the fixed costs of the U.S. business were set.

From the second half of the year ended June 2025, Shintaro Yamada served as CEO of the U.S. business as well, and the fee structure and the fixed costs were reviewed. In that same year ended June 2025, the U.S. business made its first profit for a full year.

Coverage in the book

  • It Buys No Goods, and Takes 10% Each Time a Sale Closes
  • Where Mercari's Money Comes From
  • GMV of ¥1.2856 Trillion, and 24.19 Million Users
  • The Goods Belong to the Seller Until They Sell
  • From December 2024, Trades in Which Mercari Itself Is the Buyer

Vol.6, Chapter 2 (as of 2026-08-26)

A company that takes nothing until something sells.

“Kaisha no Shikumi: Free”, Chapter 2: Mercari: Listing Is Free, and 10% Only When It Sells

Book’s reference date 2026-08-26 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeA free service's profits depend not just on how many people use it, but on who pays.

Listing is free. Only when a sale completes does it take 10% of the sale price. Nothing sells, nothing is charged, and it is the seller who pays. The 10% fee has never been raised since launch.

For the year ended June 2026, ¥1,285.6 billion passed through the marketplace business in Japan, and ¥129.5 billion stayed with the company as revenue (10.08%, calculated). The Japanese marketplace is 56.5% of revenue, finance 22.3%, and the United States 17.8%.

Revenue in the year ended June 2026 was ¥229.3 billion and operating profit ¥43.9 billion. Because it buys no goods, the consolidated statement of financial position has no line for inventories. The Buyback Request service, which started in December 2024, is the exception.

Figures from the book

How money moves at Mercari: listing is free, and 10% of the sale price reaches the company only when a sale completes

The move that changed Mercari

Mercari, still paying no dividend, approved its first purchase of its own stock since it listed.

On August 5, 2026 Mercari resolved to buy its own stock for the first time since it listed. The limit is 4 million shares and ¥10 billion ($62.5 million), and the stock acquired is due to be cancelled in full in November. As of August 27, 2026, the reference date for this research, the buying period was still running, so the number of shares actually acquired and the amount spent cannot be confirmed. The dividend remains ¥0. Revenue in the year ended June 2026 was ¥229.3 billion and operating profit ¥43.9 billion, and the last operating loss was in the year ended June 2022.

Coverage in the book

  • The Total Value of the Trades, and What Stays with the Company
  • Fintech Is 22.3% of Revenue
  • The US Business Has Been in Profit Two Years Running
