“Kaisha no Shikumi: Dividends”, Chapter 2: Nitori: A Furniture Retailer That Owns Its Factories and Its Trucking Company

Book’s reference date 2026-08-14 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeDividends are produced by structure, not by performance.

For the year ended March 2026, Nitori Holdings had revenue of ¥912.2 billion and operating income of ¥125.5 billion. Operating income was 13.8% of revenue, and shop sales made up 85.1% of consolidated revenue.

It carries every heavy part of the work itself, and the answer to how that still yields this margin lies outside the shops. Because planning, manufacturing, logistics and selling are all held inside the group, the middle margins that an ordinary furniture retailer would pass to carriers and wholesalers stay in house.

Figures from the book

How money moves at Nitori Holdings: planning, manufacturing, logistics and selling are all held inside the group
How money moves at Nitori (figure from Chapter 2 of “Kaisha no Shikumi: Dividends”, year ended March 2026, in Japanese)

The Move That Changed Nitori

The company owns the place where the goods are made, and the cut that used to go to outside makers stays inside.

Until 1993, Nitori was a retailer that bought furniture and sold it. It had no factories of its own. In 1994 it opened its own factory in Indonesia and became a maker. Nitori took thirty years to bring manufacturing, logistics, and IT in-house one at a time. It began with the automated high-bay warehouse installed at the Sapporo distribution center in 1980. It built its store inventory system in-house in 1996 and its core system in 1999. It opened a Vietnamese factory in 2004, set up the logistics subsidiary Home Logistics in 2010, and an IT subsidiary in 2022. Manufacturing, logistics, and IT came inside in that order. For the year ended March 2026: a gross margin of 53.2% and an operating margin of 13.8%.
