“Kaisha no Shikumi: Dividends”, Chapter 3: Don Quijote: The Retailer That Lets Each Store Decide

Book’s reference date 2026-08-14 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeDividends are produced by structure, not by performance.

For the year ended June 2026, Pan Pacific International Holdings (Don Quijote) had net sales of ¥2,445.2 billion and operating income of ¥174.8 billion. Operating income was 7.2% of net sales.

How goods are stacked and priced is decided by the staff in each shop, not by head office. Purchasing, pricing and display sit with the floor, while head office holds store openings and the overall frame. With that shape unchanged, the dividend has been raised for 23 years running.

Figures from the book

How money moves at PPIH: purchasing, pricing and display are decided by shop staff, while head office holds store openings and the whole
How money moves at Don Quijote (figure from Chapter 3 of “Kaisha no Shikumi: Dividends”, year ended June 2026, in Japanese)

The Move That Changed Don Quijote

On a general merchandise floor where head office set the buying and the selling price, the store decides instead.

For the year ended June 2018, PPIH had sales of ¥941.5 billion ($5.88 billion) and operating profit of ¥51.6 billion. It was a company built around Don Quijote. In January 2019 it made UNY, the operator of Apita and Piago, a wholly owned subsidiary. What it brought in was not a new management technique but the individual-store management it had run since its own founding. Onto the floors of a general merchandise chain where head office had set both the buying and the selling price, it moved the method of letting the store decide buying, pricing, and display. In the first full year, ended June 2020, sales were ¥1,681.9 billion ($10.5 billion) and operating profit ¥75.4 billion. How much of that increase came from the UNY integration alone is not disclosed.

Coverage in the book

  • The Price Tag Is Set by the Store Staff, Not by Head Office
  • A Buy-and-Sell Business, at a Gross Margin of 31.4%
  • About 95% of the Profit Comes from Japan
  • The Effects the Company Cites from Handing Authority to Stores
  • Individual-Store Management, Moved onto UNY's Sales Floors
