“Kaisha no Shikumi: Raising Prices”, Chapter 4: Shimamura: Before Raising Prices, It Cut Its Markdowns

Book’s reference date 2026-08-18 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumePricing power comes from structure, not the product.

For the year ended February 2026, Shimamura had net sales of ¥700.0 billion and operating income of ¥61.5 billion. Operating income was 8.8% of net sales, a record for the fifth year running.

It owns no factories; buyers at head office source from about 600 suppliers. It lifted its margin on a thin gross margin because of the order it chose: cut markdown selling first, raise prices second.

Figures from the book

How money moves at Shimamura: no factories of its own, with head office buyers sourcing from about 600 suppliers
How money moves at Shimamura (figure from Chapter 4 of “Kaisha no Shikumi: Raising Prices”, year ended February 2026, in Japanese)

The Move That Changed Shimamura

Before raising prices, it made a large cut in discounted selling at the register.

In the year ended February 2019, Shimamura had sales of ¥546.0 billion ($3.41 billion) and operating profit of ¥25.5 billion, down 40.7% on the year before, with an operating margin of 4.7%. At existing stores, sales were 93.2%, the customer count 97.9%, and spend per customer 97.2%, with the customer count and spend per customer falling at the same time. The company made a large reduction in discounted selling at the register, held down overproduction through short-lead production with suppliers, and moved to inventory management that shifts goods from stores where they do not sell to stores where they do. Alongside that it rebuilt its private brand CLOSSHI and added the higher-priced CLOSSHI PREMIUM. The markdown rate was 8.4% in the year ended February 2021 and 7.3% in the year ended February 2022. Operating profit for the year ended February 2022 was ¥49.4 billion, passing the record set in the year ended February 2017. By the year ended February 2026 the markdown rate was 6.2% and operating profit ¥61.5 billion.

Coverage in the book

  • Across the Five Years of Record Profits, the Markdown Rate Was Falling
  • What Does Shimamura Earn From?
  • The Markdown Rate Went from 8.4% to 6.2%
  • The Year Operating Profit Fell 40.7%, and the Year It Was Lowest
  • The Increase Was 3% to 4%, and the Customer Count Did Not Fall
