“Kaisha no Shikumi: Subscriptions”, Chapter 6: chocoZAP: The ¥2,980-a-Month (Before Tax) Convenience-Store Gym

Book’s reference date 2026-08-22 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeA subscription business's profits cannot be judged by member count alone.

Chocozap, run by the RIZAP Group, charges ¥2,980 a month before tax, or ¥3,278 including tax. It has kept the same price since launch while increasing the number of gyms.

Membership and gym count grew faster than at any of the 8 companies covered in the book. Growing by scale without moving the price shows up in the accounts as well.

Figures from the book

Gyms added while the monthly price stayed at the same ¥2,980 as at launch
How Chocozap grew (figure from Chapter 6 of “Kaisha no Shikumi: Subscriptions”, in Japanese)

The move that changed RIZAP

It froze new acquisitions as a rule and rolled out an unstaffed gym at ¥2,980 a month.

In the year ended March 2018, ¥8.7 billion ($54.4 million) of RIZAP Group's operating profit of ¥11.8 billion, or 73.6%, was an accounting gain that came with an acquisition, a gain on bargain purchase. In the following year, the year ended March 2019, it recorded impairments and others and posted an operating loss of ¥8.5 billion, and froze new acquisitions as a rule. chocoZAP, which started in July 2022, reached 1.010 million members in about a year and five months. Over the same stretch the group's consolidated accounts show operating losses in the years ended March 2023 and March 2024. The consolidated operating result was ¥1.9 billion in the year ended March 2025 and ¥11.1 billion in the year ended March 2026. The amount of operating profit is close to the level of the year ended March 2018, but after the ¥5.8 billion of the year ended March 2017 and the ¥8.7 billion of the year ended March 2018, the gain on bargain purchase was ¥1.3 billion in the year ended March 2019. No amount on the scale of ¥5.8 billion or ¥8.7 billion has been recorded since. The company says that turning chocoZAP profitable was the main reason the healthcare and beauty segment's profit rose.
