“Kaisha no Shikumi: Order Backlog and the Cost of Completion”, Chapter 5: Metawater: Turning a 20-Year Contract into Sales a Little at a Time

Book’s reference date 2026-09-12 / data last checked 2026-10-20

Key points in this volumeAn order backlog represents expected future revenue, not guaranteed profit. The profit from each order depends on the contract price and the total cost of completing the work, often over several years.

Sales in the year ended March 2026 were ¥209.8 billion, operating profit ¥12.9 billion and the operating margin 6.1%. Orders received in the same year were ¥274.5 billion, and the order backlog at the year-end ¥389.3 billion.

The backlog includes 20 years of operation, such as the Aoki water purification plant in Mitsuke, running from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2041, and about 70% of it is expected to become sales within three years.

The move that changed Metawater

It took on 20 years of operation and maintenance in the same project contract as the design and construction.

The contract for the Aoki Water Purification Plant renewal project in Mitsuke City brings together the four years and eight months of design and construction and the 20 years of operation that follow. Under a contract for the construction alone, the amount leaves the backlog at handover. Under a contract that includes the operation, the 20 years after the construction ends stay in the backlog and become sales each year as the service is provided. How much of the ¥11.2 billion ($70.0 million) contract amount is construction and where the operation begins is not disclosed.

Coverage in the book

  • Twenty Years of Operation Begin after the Work on a Water Purification Plant Ends
  • Operating the Facilities It Designed and Built with Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
  • The Order Backlog Went from ¥138.6 Billion to ¥389.3 Billion
  • A Contract Signed in 2016 Runs to March 2041
  • Construction Is Recognized as Sales as the Work Progresses, Operation across the Period of Service
